Uuencoded File Decoder
Uuencoding is the ancestor of Base64, used for Usenet and e-mail attachments. Paste uuencoded text, or load a file or URL, and the decoder finds every begin … end block, decodes it and offers a preview and download.
Uuencoded file format
begin 644 hello.txt
.2&5L;&\L(%=O<FQD(0H`
`
end begin <mode> <name>starts a file; the mode is the Unix permission, for example 644.- Each data line starts with a character that encodes how many bytes it holds (
M= 45 bytes). - Groups of 3 bytes become 4 characters in the range ASCII 32–95; a backtick is often used instead of a space.
begin-base64…====blocks (GNU sharutils) contain standard Base64 instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between uuencode and Base64?
Both turn 3 bytes into 4 printable characters, but uuencode uses ASCII 32–95 and per-line length characters, while Base64 uses a cleaner alphabet that survives more systems.
