Gzip Compression Test

Enter a URL to check whether the server compresses its responses. Compression is especially important for pages and stylesheets that contain Base64 data URIs, because Base64 text compresses very well.

How to enable compression

# Nginx
gzip on;
gzip_types text/css application/javascript application/json image/svg+xml;

# Apache (.htaccess)
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/css application/javascript

Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel and most CDNs compress text responses automatically with gzip or Brotli. Images such as PNG and JPG are already compressed and gain almost nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does gzip matter for Base64?

Base64 inflates data by 33%, but gzip/Brotli win most of that back on the wire. Inlining Base64 without compression is wasteful.
