CSS Data URI Converter

Paste a stylesheet, choose a file, or enter the URL of a remote CSS file. The converter finds every url(...) reference, downloads the resources that are smaller than your size limit, and replaces them with Base64 data URIs.

When inlining CSS images helps

Each external image costs a request. For small icons, inlining them as Base64 data URIs removes that request and avoids flicker. Above a few kilobytes the 33% size overhead and lost caching outweigh the benefit, which is why the converter has a size limit. Serve the result with gzip or Brotli to recover most of the Base64 overhead.

Frequently asked questions

Should I inline every CSS image?

No. Inline small icons and backgrounds only. Large images bloat the CSS, block rendering and cannot be cached separately.
